Convert a PDF to Word
PDF to Word on ilovspdfs reads the text layer of a PDF and writes an editable Word document with headings and paragraphs in reading order. Layout, columns, images and fonts are not reproduced. It runs on ilovspdfs servers as part of Pro: the file is sent over HTTPS, processed in memory, and never stored.

About this tool
A PDF stores positioned glyphs, not paragraphs, so turning one back into a document means inferring the structure from where the text sits. This tool does that inference and says plainly what it did not attempt: you get the words in reading order, with headings recognised by their size and paragraphs by their spacing, as a .docx that opens anywhere and edits cleanly. You do not get the original layout, multi-column flow, images, or fonts, because reconstructing those from positions alone produces the kind of Word file made of floating boxes that nobody can work with. A scanned PDF has no text layer; run OCR on it first.

Questions
- Is my file uploaded for this tool?
- Yes. Unlike the tools marked Private, this one sends your file to an ilovspdfs server over HTTPS, processes it in memory, and streams the result straight back as the response. Nothing is written to disk, nothing is logged about the contents, and nothing remains once the response has been sent.
- Will the Word document look like the PDF?
- No, and it is not meant to. It carries the text in reading order with headings and paragraphs, so it is clean to edit. Columns, tables, images and the original fonts are not reproduced. If you need the look rather than the words, keep the PDF.
- My PDF is a scan. Will this work?
- Not directly: a scan has no text layer to read, and the tool will say so rather than hand back an empty document. Run OCR PDF on it first, then convert the result.
- Why does this tool need a Pro subscription?
- Because it runs on hardware we pay for. Everything that runs in your own browser stays free with no account, at any file size. The cloud tools are the few jobs a browser tab genuinely cannot do, and Pro is what pays for the machines that do them.
